What's included

3 illustrated books

A 120-page theory book that follows the exam outline, 60 rapid review cards, and a bonus A–Z of 100 key terms.

One idea per page

A drawing does the explaining, and the text stays short. You remember the picture on exam day.

Made for your phone

Portrait pages sized for a phone screen. Study in five-minute gaps, or print them if you prefer paper.

About 1 in 2 don’t pass

That’s roughly how many cosmetology written exams end in a fail.

The toughest topics are the ones that are easy to mix up and hard to memorize:

Infection control & safety

Chemical services: waves, relaxers & color

Chemistry & electricity

Hair, skin & nail disorders

A picture is easier to remember than a list of terms. That’s why every one of these is drawn out in the kit.

Estimate based on Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation exam statistics: 49.05% of 21,331 cosmetology operator written exams passed in fiscal year 2025 (all attempts, including retakes).

Same content. A very different night of studying.

You're studying for one written exam, not a whole textbook

Most states give the NIC national written exam, and some write their own. Both are built from the same standard textbooks, and the kit follows the NIC outline page by page, so your study time goes to what the outline lists.

State-written

Your state writes its own exam

Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois and several other states write their own theory exam. It covers the same textbook ground with its own weights and usually some state law. Check your state's candidate bulletin for its outline and law section; Book 1's state lookup shows which exam your state uses.

NIC figures from the published NIC Cosmetology Theory candidate bulletin (effective July 1, 2022, revised Jan 1, 2026). Passing scores are set by each state. Every page in Book 1 is tagged with its NIC outline code and its PSI content area.

Stop rereading the same chapter

A lot of exam mistakes aren't things you never learned. They're near-twins that are easy to mix up under time pressure, like these:

eponychium vs. hyponychiumliving skin at the base of the nail vs. under the free edge
cleaning vs. disinfecting vs. sterilizingremoving dirt vs. killing most germs on surfaces vs. killing all microbial life
anagen vs. telogenthe growing phase vs. the resting phase
reduction vs. oxidationthe wave solution breaks the bonds; the neutralizer rebuilds them

That's what the Exam Trap and Memory Hook boxes are for. The trap names the mix-up in plain words, and the hook helps you keep it straight:

Exam trap

Yellow is cancelled by violet, not blue. Blue cancels orange. Choose the color straight across the wheel, not any cool color.

Memory hook Across the wheel is the cure: blue for orange, violet for yellow, green for red.

1Cosmetology Theory Illustrated · 120 pages + state lookup+
One idea per page across the whole written exam: infection control and safety, anatomy and physiology, chemistry and electricity, hair and scalp, haircutting and styling, chemical texture services, hair color, nails, and skin care and makeup. Up front: how to use the book, the exam at a glance, a state lookup showing which states use NIC, PSI or their own exam, and a page on what's state-specific. Every page is tagged with its outline code, with an Exam Trap callout and a Memory Hook wherever a real one exists.
2Rapid Review Cards · 60 cards+
A question and its answer on the same page, with a small drawing — cover the bottom half and test yourself. Built for the last two weeks before your test date. Each card points to the full page in Book 1, so a miss takes you straight back to the idea you need.
3Bonus: The Words of Cosmetology · 100 terms+
An illustrated A to Z of 100 key terms. Each entry gives a plain-English definition, an exam note on the mix-up to know, and the Book 1 page that teaches it in full.

Is this kit for you?

You're in cosmetology school

Your program ends with a written exam, and it's getting close. You need the theory to finally click, not another chapter to reread.

You study in the gaps

Work, kids, clinic floor hours. Your study time is ten minutes on your phone. One page, one idea, done.

Your test date is booked

The material is in your head somewhere. Now you need it organized the way the exam outline lays it out.

How this kit is made

No gimmicks and no shortcuts — just the exam outline, drawn clearly.

Built on the published outlines

Every page starts from the NIC National Cosmetology Theory outline and uses the same terms as the standard textbooks your school teaches from.

Honest about the gray areas

Where sources disagree, or a rule varies by state, the page says so — in plain words, right where you're studying it.

Mapped, not padded

Each page carries its outline code. If a topic isn't on the exam outline, it isn't in the book taking up your study time.

Independent, on purpose

We're an independent study aid — not affiliated with NIC, PSI, Prometric, Milady, or any state board. We just make the material easier to see.

7-day money-back guarantee

Use the kit for 7 days. If it doesn't help you, email us and you get 100% of your money back. No fine print, no hassle.

Frequently asked questions

How will I receive the books?+
Right after purchase, we email you download links for all three PDFs. Save them to your phone, tablet, or computer. They're yours to keep. You also get a student area where you can download them again anytime.
Is this a one-time payment or a subscription?+
One-time payment of $27. No subscription, no recurring charges.
Which exam does this cover?+
The written theory exam. Book 1 follows the NIC National Cosmetology Theory outline, the exam most states use. If your state writes its own exam (Texas, Florida, New York and Illinois are among them), its theory covers the same textbook ground, but check your state's bulletin for its outline and any state-law questions before you buy. Each page is also tagged with its PSI content area. The state lookup in Book 1 shows which exam your state uses. It does not cover the hands-on practical exam.
Can I study on my phone?+
Yes — the pages are portrait, phone-sized, and built around one idea each. If you prefer paper, they print cleanly too.
Is this affiliated with NIC, PSI, or Milady?+
No. This is an independent study aid built from the publicly available exam outlines and candidate information, using standard industry terms. It is not affiliated with NIC, PSI, Prometric, Milady, or any state board.
Does it include my state's laws and rules?+
No — state laws and board rules vary too much to cover responsibly in one book. Book 1 includes one page explaining what is state-specific and where to find it, and your state board publishes the rest.
What if it doesn't help me?+
Email info@cosmetologymadesimple.com within 7 days of purchase and we'll refund 100% of your money. See the refund policy for details.

One last thing before you decide…

The written exam doesn't have to be the scary part of getting licensed. You don't need to reread the textbook. You need to see how the material fits together, the way the exam outline lays it out.
